Roulette tips and strategy
Roulette

Roulette is a classic game that probably symbolizes gambling more than any other. Easily recognized by its prominent roulette table and wheel, this game has a rich and colorful history and is extremely simple to play, making it a huge favorite among traditional and online gamblers alike.

The Object of Roulette

The object of the game is to predict where the ball will fall once the roulette wheel stops spinning and to claim any payouts on winning outcomes.

The Roulette Wheel

Firstly, it is important to distinguish between American and European roulette. This can usually be done by looking at the roulette wheel. The classic European roulette wheel has 37 slots (numbers one through to 36 and one zero), while American roulette, which was created to improve the house edge, has 38 slots – the difference being an extra zero on the wheel, distinguished as 00.

The numbers on a roulette wheel are either red or black, while the zeros are in green. The slots are positioned in alternate patterns of odd and even numbers and also alternate colors. The payout is determined when the roulette ball falls into one of the slots on the wheel.

The Roulette Table

The 36 numbers on the roulette wheel are represented on the customized roulette table so that players can place their bets on the corresponding areas. The numbers are arranged in three equal columns of 12. The table also includes different kinds of bets such as odds/evens, etc.

Betting in Roulette

Players can make inside or outside bets on the roulette table. An inside bet can be a wager on a specific number (straight bet) or on adjacent numbers (split bet).  An outside bet can constitute wagering that the ball will fall on and odd or even number. What is important to remember is that the odds for each type of bet differ. A straight bet comes with payout odds of 35:1, while even/odd bets pay out 1:1.

How to Play Roulette

-    Players place their bets on the roulette table.
-    The croupier (dealer) announces that there are no more bets to be had and starts the roulette wheel spinning.
-    The ball falls into one of the slots on the wheel and the wheel eventually stops.
-    Winning numbers are isolated on the roulette table.
-    The croupier clears the roulette table from all bets and pays out any winning numbers.

Roulette Strategy

As a game of chance, there is no real strategy that players can learn in order to shift the house edge in their favor. Unlike games of skill where a basic strategy can be memorized, roulette players simply have to hope that they hit a winning streak and sit back to enjoy the game.

There are several roulette strategy methods, such as the Martingdale system, that claim to affect the house edge, however these have proven to be myths and simply do not work in real life gambling.

With that in mind, however, it is recommended to read the tips section below, which will indicate certain steps that players might take in order to affect the outcome of their game.

Roulette Tips

-    Stick to European roulette whenever possible. The house edge for this version of roulette is significantly lower than if you play American roulette (2.7% against a whopping 5.26%). Today, thanks to online gambling, it is possible to find European roulette at virtually every type of internet casino. Look out for tables with only one zero!
-    Check out the ‘surrender’ rule. European roulette games and a few American games include a surrender rule that brings the house edge down even more. Essentially, if you place an outside bet and the ball lands on 0 or 00, you lose half your bet and not the whole one.
-    Play online for free. By downloading the free software offered by online casinos, you will be able to familiarize yourself with the software and practice playing roulette, without sabotaging your bankroll. Learn the rules of the game, hone your skills and build up your confidence to eventually move over to real-money play.
-    Develop a sound money management system. Keeping on top of your finances and knowing exactly how much you have to spend, is definitely an easy way to avoid losses at the roulette wheel. Stick to tables where minimum wagering limits won’t wipe out your bankroll after a few spins and never chase losses.
