Blackjack tips and strategy
Blackjack

No game combines the elements of chance, skill and excitement like blackjack does. This game, so popular at all types of casinos, is played by millions of people around the globe, who are attracted to the simplicity of its rules and the thought that goes behind creating successful hands that equal 21. The online gambling industry has created several versions of the game with slightly different rules and interesting twists, including exciting tournaments. The basic premise of all these games, however, remains the same.

The Object of Blackjack

The object of blackjack is to get cards whose value totals 21 or less, without going over this amount, and to beat the dealer’s hand. Blackjack is played against the house and the other players around the table are irrelevant to the game.

The Card Values in Blackjack

In blackjack, the ‘royal’ cards (ie. Jack, Queen and King) are valued at 10. An Ace is valued at 1 or 11, depending on the type of hand that the player chooses. All other cards (ie. 2 through to 10) have the face value.

How to Play Blackjack

As mentioned, there are several types of blackjack versions but for simplicity’s sake, we will outline the basic rules of classic blackjack, on which most variants are based.

-    The player places his bet on the customized blackjack table, in the specially designated spot.
-    Two cards are dealt face up to the player. The dealer then deals himself one card facing up, and another facing down (known as the hole card).
-    After checking his cards, the player now has to make a decision regarding the rest of the game. The player can hit, stand, double down, split, surrender or take insurance.
-    Hitting – This means that the total value of the player’s cards are not high enough and therefore warrant asking the dealer for another card.
-    Standing – This means that the player is satisfied with his cards and does not want to request another card and risk going over 21 (“bust”).
-   Double Down – This means that the player can double his original bet, in return for only one more card being dealt.
-    Splitting – If the player was dealt a pair of cards of the same value, the hand can be split to form two separate hands by placing another bet equal to the first. Special rules may apply to re-splitting, as well as the splitting of Aces.
-    Insurance – If the dealer’s face up card is an Ace, the player can take an insurance bet at the cost of half his original bet that pays 2:1 if the dealer gets a blackjack.
-    Surrender – The player can surrender the game and forfeit half his original bet if he is not satisfied with his cards. No surrendering can take place if the dealer has a blackjack.

How to Win at Blackjack

A ‘natural’ blackjack – ie. two cards valued at 21 from the first two dealt – is considered the highest hand in the game. A winning blackjack hand will pay the player out odds of 3:2. A player’s blackjack will beat any dealer’s total except a straight blackjack, including 21. If the player and the dealer get a blackjack, the hand is considered a tie (‘push’).

Blackjack Strategy

As blackjack is a game of skill, it is important for the player to become familiar with what is known as the basic strategy. This is a based on mathematical calculations, tested by computer simulation, to give players the best possible move to make with every hand of cards dealt. Playing with the basic strategy usually allows the player to bring the house edge down to the minimum – just under 1%. The basic blackjack strategy can be memorized off handy laminated charts and are a definite must-have for any serious blackjack player.

Blackjack Tips

-    Accept that losses are part of the game. Even using the basic strategy will not ensure that you win 100% of the time.
-    Practice online. Download free software from your favorite online casino and practice the basic strategy for as long as you need, without risking your bankroll. When your skills are honed and your confidence levels are up, switch to real-money play.
-    Avoid the insurance bet, as the risks are too great.
-    Manage your bankroll well and know when to walk away. Never chase losses and remember that surrendering can also be considered a good strategy if you know that you have too much to lose in the long run.
-    Have fun!
